Synopsis
Erik is a police constable in a small English village in 1888. Set apart by his size, and his Swedish origin, he works hard to fit in, to belong, and to gain respect through his hard work. After trying to come to terms with the news of his younger sister's disappearance in London, he is emotionally unstable, and kills his best friend during a poker game. He steals his friend's money, and tries to cover up the murder by making it look like an accident, but unfortunately things don't go to plan. When two Scotland Yard detectives arrive Erik has to work alongside them, pretending to investigate his own crime. Although he is in awe by their presence, he also feels he is their equal, and tries to impress his friends and family with his new-found status as a murder detective.
Erik uses the money he stole from his best friend to impress his girlfriend Emily, and to buy the accessories necessary to improve his lifestyle. Emily is a nurse at the local lunatic asylum. She is attracted by the kindness she senses inside Erik, and when he proposes she thinks she will find happiness and security with him.
While outwardly being busy trying to solve the murder, Erik sneaks off to London as often as he can. He searches for his sister, and makes some unexpected acquaintances amongst the foggy and dark streets of Whitechapel.
Erik finds that the only solution to his problems is to murder again, and thus he almost accidentally becomes a serial killer, who kills to get out of a sticky situation, and then believes he is forced to kill again. Through it all he is genuinely convinced he is a good man, and if things occasionally go wrong, it is never his fault.
When he discovers that he can easily take on someone else's identity, he embarks on a journey to France, where he finds the luxury lifestyle he has yearned for is finally within reach. Before he can leave all his troubles behind and start afresh, he returns home once more to clear up an unresolved matter, but unforeseen events ruin his plans completely. He loses control, and goes on a manic killing spree, with the local police force and the Scotland Yard in hot pursuit. But will he get away..?

His size and his Swedish origin set him apart, and he wants to belong, to be noticed. He finds love with Emily, another lonely soul, and gains respect as a policeman, but he constantly wants more. He murders to get what he wants, murders again to escape from a bad situation, but never stops believing he's a genuinely good man.
